Happy Snow Day!

With our snow day today & no school tomorrow (for teacher's professional development), it makes for a short week!
Remember, our LAST NWEA test is this Wednesday at 10:30 AM.

As for our music field trip that was scheduled today, unfortunately there will be no rescheduling.  All money will be returned to you.  Thank you!

Here are some things we have been up to!
In math last week, we introduced a new important counting skill:  counting by 5s to 100!  This grouping concept helps develop a sense of larger numbers.

 With this also comes Tally Marks!
We read a fun math story:

And tallied the boys and girls in our classroom:
The most difficult part of tallies for Ks is remembering to make the fifth one across 4 tallies, to make the group.  This is a great skill to practice at home - then count them up by counting by 5s!

In January, we also started a buddy mentoring program with Mrs. Tabaka's Third Grade Class!  Throughout the school year, we will do various projects with our buddies.
Here are some shots of reading with our buddies.  We read to them and they read to us!

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. in K

This week we read and learned about Martin Luther King Jr.

And we recorded some facts about him:

Then the kiddos talked about the facts they learned with a partner, and I typed them up.  We learned how to draw Martin Luther King Jr. and we all gave it a try!  Then with our 3rd Grade Buddies, we added words he might say and glued on our facts about him.  Take a look at how they come out:

We also did a math journal about him:

Here is a video we watched together:

Next week, we will continue our discussion and talk more in general about the concept of peace.  Here are some important dates for this week:
Monday, Jan. 21st: No School!
Wednesday, Jan. 23rd:  NWEA at 10:30
Friday, Jan. 25:  January Book Orders due!

MLK Family Activity

On Monday, January 21st, we are off school in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to our society.  We have begun our discussions in the classroom.  Here is a great opportunity for your family that day to learn more about his contributions and to celebrate:

I hope you will consider this opportunity!

Back To It!

We are getting right back to it in Kindergarten this week!  Take a look:

Number Scrolling:  Most students are feeling comfortable writing through teen numbers!

Building shapes with geoboards!

We have been working hard on understanding the concept of addition.  We are telling different types of number stories where we take two parts and put them together.  We also learned the plus + symbol and the equals = symbol, so that we can write number sentences to match our stories!  I encourage you to try this at home to have your child should you what he/she can do! :)

During Math Work Stations, we have been using dominos to help us write and solve number sentences in Domino Addition!

This week, I also introduced Attribute Blocks.  These blocks vary is size, shape, color and thickness.  So we discussed and learned these attributes and sorted the blocks by different attributes.  Thickness is a new property for many Ks, so we learned special math terms thick and thin.

Ms. Moray taught us a new game called "My Shape is on the Table."  We laid out all of the blocks and Ms. Moray chose a mystery block.  Our Ks had to ask her questions about the attributes of the blocks in order to figure out which one she chose.  Here are some questions we asked:
Is it a square?  (shape)
Is it yellow? (color)
Is it thick? (thickness)
Is it large? (size)
Through our questions, we were able to take shapes off the table until the mystery block remained.
It was a fun way to practice our attributes!

In Math Work Stations, we are continuing to work on our sense of numbers.  In the Teen Frame game,  each partner spins a number and builds it on a teen frame.  This week, we used a ten strip to lay out a ten and then added how many more we needed to make the teen number.  This really helps to reinforce the idea of tens and ones in teen numbers.  Then we write it on our board and compare with our partner.

Rhyme is something we continue to work on throughout the whole school year, as a part of phonological awareness.  We are getting really good at matching rhymes, so this week we played a game that helps us produce rhymes.  We pretended that magical bunnies where traveling on a spaceship to the moon, but they could only take with them things that rhymed.  We started with a word like cat and passed the beanbag around the circle to share other words they could take (bat, fat, sat, mat, flat).  We also practiced with dog, cake, and pan.
Then we drew our own:
chair, bear, hair, care, air, lair

tree, bee, he, she, me, three

cake, lake, cupcake, rake, make, bake

Generating a list of rhyming words is a more difficult task for most Ks.  This would be a good skill to practice at home!  Soon, we will begin to work with word families, which will also support this skill.

Winter Gear
Snow boots, snow pants, hats & gloves, OH MY!
With the cold and the snow that comes in January (usually!), our Ks have a lot of winter gear to manage.  Your child should be bringing all of these things each day, because we do go outside for recess.  Snow boots are especially important so that feet don't get wet and cold.

Here are a couple tips to help your child manage all this;
1.  Get one of those re-usable grocery bags for your child to put the gear in.  Most of the time, everything doesn't fit in a backpack and our coat racks provide very limited space.  These bags can more easily be hung on the rack.
2.  Keep an extra pair of socks in your child's backpack in case of wet feet!
3.  Keep a regular plastic grocery bag with your child's things as well, for wet stuff to be placed in.
4.  Make sure your child has a hat and gloves/mittens every day!  Sometimes they tend to argue that they don't need them but they do! :)

Supplies
It's a new year and we are in need of some new supplies.
If you can donate any of the following, it would be greatly appreciated.
* Clorox wipes!!!
* small Ziploc baggies
* tissues
* Playdoh
* colored pencils
* snacks (Goldfish crackers, pretzels, crackers)

NWEA:  Our next test session is Wednesday, so please do your best to have your child in school that day.

NWEA Schedule

Today we took a practice test for the NWEA, and I think the kiddos are feeling fairly comfortable.  Here is our schedule for the 4 test sessions (2 Reading and 2 Math); however this is subject to change.  Sorry for the late notice, but our schedule just changed today.
If your child is absent for the test, he or she must make it up during another time.  This means missing other activities, so please do your best to ensure your child is at school on the days of the test.

Wednesday, January 9th (TOMORROW!!) at 10:30 am
Wednesday, January 16th at 10:30 am
Wednesday, January 23rd at 10:30 am
Wednesday, January 30th at 10:30 am

Talk to your child about listening and thinking carefully about the questions.  Just encourage him/her to do his/her best!  As always, give your child a hearty breakfast before school and make sure he/she is getting plenty of rest! :)

Review & Updates of Safety Procedures

As a school community, we work hard to keep our school a safe, caring, and productive environment.  Therefore, I wanted to send some refreshers and updates of the Safety Procedures in our building.

* Children and parents are not to be in the building before the bell rings in the morning, unless on specific business with a teacher or the Office.  If your child is eating breakfast, he/she is to stay in the multipurpose room or return outside when finished.  There is no supervision before the bell rings, so you should be with your child.
* All doors will be locked after the bell rings, except the front door of the school.  DO NOT OPEN ANY DOORS FOR OTHERS.  Doors are locked for a reason and some doors are not meant to be entrances (especially the door by our Kindergarten classrooms).  If an adult is entering the building during the school day, he or she must use the front door and check in at the Office each time.  You must display a Visitor's Badge.
* If you are picking your child up before the bell rings at the end of the day, you must check in at the Office and check your child out for the school day.  This is something I have been a bit lax on in the past - usually I'd let you slide if it was a matter of minutes ;)  However, from now on, I will require you to check your child out from the Office first.  You should not be coming directly to the classroom at any point.
* A new procedure is that classroom doors are to remained locked and closed during the school day.  If you child is coming in late, after checking in at the Office, he/she must knock on the door to enter the classroom.  As always, please make every effort to get your child to school for the bell.
*  All school staff are to wear an ID card at all times.

I know some of these seem a little tough and rough, but they are a matter of safety.  Staff members, family members, and students are all responsible for carrying out these procedures.  Thank you for your support!

Gingerbread Fun

In December, we had some fun with the classic story, The Gingerbread Boy!  We read multiple versions and twist on the classic tale and compared them to each other based on the characters, repeated phrase, and the ending.  Here is what we read:

After reading lots and lots, we decided to add our own twist to the story.  We used our creative minds to develop a new character for the gingerbread boy or girl to run away from and we wrote about it.  We have been working on learning the words he and she, so it was the perfect opportunity for the girls to write about the gingerbread girl and the boys to write about the gingerbread boy!  Take a look:
"She ran away from a polar bear."

 "She ran away from Santa and the elf."

"He ran away from a gorilla."

"He ran away from an angry mob on the sidewalk."

We also did some fun gingerbread math activities!
Math Journal

Roll a Gingerbread Man!
With a partners, our Ks took turn rolling a die.  Based on what was rolled, they then used the direction sheet to the part of the gingerbread indicated.  They had fun!

After we decorated our cookies (see below), we took one bite and looked at our cookie to figure out which part we ate first!  Here are our results!  As always, we talked about the most, least, and number of each one.

COOKIES!!!!!!

They all look like they are concentrating so hard! :)  The cookies came out great!  Thank you again to everyone who made something or donated to make this fun activity possible!
