Catching up...

We have been busy!  After Dr. Suess, we have been studying classic Fairy Tales!  Let me tell you, Kindergarteners LOVE Fairy Tales!
First, we studied The Three Little Pigs!  We have been learning about narrative story elements: characters, setting, problem  and solution.

Look, we made our own setting:

When you are reading narrative stories together at home, ask your child to tell you about these story elements!

We have also been working on the important skill of retelling.  The Three Little Pigs is great for this because the kiddos love saying things like, "Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll BLOW your house down!"  We worked in teams to re-tell each part of the story with writing:

Want to re-tell the story at home?!  Click here for printable props from the story! :)  You can put the characters on popsicle sticks for puppets!

We also enjoyed Goldilocks and the Three Bears this week!  Click here for those props for re-telling at home!

Museum of Art
Our field trip was fun!  We even got to make some of our own art:

REMINDER:
There is NO SCHOOL next Friday, March 29th.  This is the beginning of Spring Break.  We return to school on Monday, April 8th.

Unfortunately this falls right during our scheduled lunch time.  If possible that day, please plan to pack your child a lunch.  We will eat lunch in the classroom at 11:00 before we leave.  I am still working with our lunch staff to determine if kids will be able to access a school lunch that early.  Stay tuned...

I am looking for a few parents to join us.  If you would like to attend, please send me an email.  I can only bring a few, so I will let you know on a first come, first serve basis.  Thank you for understanding.

The permission slip should be coming home today - so please check your child's folder for it and return it to school by Tuesday.  Thank you!

Catching Up on Dr. Seuss!

Our Dr. Seuss fun
.... is done!

Well, are you ever done with Dr. Seuss?  I say no!  But here are some of the things we experienced last week with Dr. Seuss.

Green Eggs and Ham
After we read the book, Sam-I-Am visited our classroom and dropped off...
some green eggs and "ham"(cream cheese rolled in spinach wraps)!
Each K got to try and decide, "Do you like green eggs and ham?"  We graphed the results and found out that more of us do!

THANK YOU Carlson Family!!!

Here, he writes his answer on a post-it for our graph.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
After reading this story, we did some math with goldfish.  Each K got ten colored goldfish crackers in a cup and we recorded some data:
Thank you for the Goldfish Crackers Ghussaini Family!

And we did some writing:
(what great practice for number and color words!)

We also enjoyed a tasty treat!
THANK YOU Buchanan Family!

I Can Read with my Eyes Shut!
This book introduced our shared reading chart for this week, and we talked about all different places we can read and different people or creatures we could read with!
And we wrote about it:
I will read in a stomach!

Love how she used the characters from the Cat in the Hat! :)

HOP ON POP
Friday was a great day for this story because we all got to enjoy POPcorn!  We studied the -op word family that day with words like (hop, pop, shop, slop, bop, etc.).

All week, we sure heard a LOT of rhyme in Dr. Seuss's books.  So we discussed how exactly to make a rhyme.  This are great rules to practice at home for rhyme generation.

At the end of the week, we asked, "What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book?"  So we sat behind our favorite book that we read:

And graphed our results:
Which book did we like the most?  Wacky Wednesday!

Vladimir's Dad read us his favorite Dr. Seuss book!

We also read an emergent reader about Dr. Seuss with our 3rd Grade Buddies:

I hope you read this at home together too!

What a GREAT week!  THANK YOU to all of the families who donated books to our classroom from the Book Fair!  Your generosity and love of reading melts my heart.  And I can't wait to read all the books with the kids!

The Cat in the Hat!

Today, the Cat in the Hat visited our classroom and dropped off some great books and snacks! :)

We talked about a big word today: Character!  And we discussed character traits, that describe what a character is like.  We came up with some great words based on what the Cat in the Hat did and said in the story:

Then we drew our own Cat in the Hat!

Then we enjoyed some tasty treats: yogurt & strawberry parfaits!  It looked just like the Cat in the Hat's hat!  (Thank you Peralta Family!)

We continue our Dr. Seuss studies tomorrow!  I wonder who will visit next? :)

P.S. Target was selling Dr. Seuss books for only $5 a piece!
